Saona is the best-known excursion in the Dominican Republic, and every boat leaves from Bayahibe, a few minutes from our apartments. From Punta Cana it is over an hour to the pier; you are there in a few minutes.
The island is part of Cotubanamá National Park (formerly Parque Nacional del Este) and is protected. There are no hotels or roads, just palm-lined beaches, mangroves and one fishing village, Mano Juan.
A typical trip takes the whole day. You go out by speedboat (about 45 minutes) and come back by catamaran (about an hour and a half), or the other way round. On the way you stop at the natural pool, a sandbar in the open sea with waist-deep turquoise water where starfish live.
On the island there is a buffet lunch, drinks and several hours on the beach. Pricier options travel in small groups to quieter beaches such as Canto de la Playa.
